Growing up in a Christian household, Michael Ku knew he wanted to join the seminary after earning his bachelor’s degree even before he decided on the university he would attend. After choosing George Mason University, Ku began his coursework in religious studies, a major he selected to better understand the beliefs of all people and broaden his own perspective.

“Going in depth with what Buddhism teaches, what Christianity teaches, what Islam teaches, and what other religions teach makes you more tolerant,” he said. “It also makes you more appreciative of where other people are coming from and why they believe the things they believe.” He adds, “I think it’s sad when people are quick to criticize other peoples' views right away without first understanding where others are coming from. You don't always have to agree with others, but respectfulness for others should always be a priority.”

Ku says that one of the most valuable skills he has gained is to read with a more strategic eye—learning to read between the lines and delve into the deeper meaning of the content. In one assignment, he and his classmates searched the Constitution for its connections to religion, for insight into what some of the text was really saying.

“A lot of the readings that we do can range anywhere from seventeenth century philosophers to present day,” explains Ku, “so it can get really confusing at times. My professors teach me how to extract the information that I need.”

Ku appreciates being able to talk with his professors outside of class to pursue deeper conversation on the lessons taught. “It’s a way to challenge myself to think,” he says. “I’m coming to these professors who know the material so much better than I do. You want to take all the knowledge that you can.”

Outside of Mason, Ku is actively involved with his local church. He works with youth ministries organizing retreats, bible study, and other events. He’s taken several service trips, including one to Honduras where he and others helped build a house and clean a local soccer field.

“I just hope to make the best use of this education,” Ku said. “Having the opportunity to come to Mason, or any educational institution like Mason, is a real blessing. Take every step possible to milk everything you can from Mason. It has so much to offer.”
