Section Information for Spring 2021
Christianity – to be reduced, reused, recycled, retrieved, reconfigured, or... resurrected? The intellectual changes brought about by modernity—from the scientific method and reason to the emphasis on human rights and individualism—raised critical questions about a Christian understanding of the world. This course will examine some of the most influential modern critiques of religion (e.g., Hume and Kant), and the responses of key modern Christian thinkers who provided new ways to understand Christianity in an emerging global world (e.g., Schleiermacher, Kierkegaard, Pope Leo XIII, HRNiebuhr, MLK, Flannery O'Connor, etc.). In addition to philosophy, literary fiction, film, and social science, the course will examine unique contemporary expressions of Christian identity, from the rise of global storefront Christianity to the religion of transnational Latino youth gangs.
RELI 316 DL1 is a distance education section.
