Section Information for Fall 2017

What are some of Africa's main challenges today, and how do Africans respond to them? This course we will study Africa from through francophone writers and filmmakers in Enlgish translation.  We will analyze social, cultural, and even economic issues on the continent and its place in the world.  We will begin by looking at the colonial project and African critiques of it.   We will then turn to postcolonial political history, including the disappointments of national independences, various forms of neocolonialism, and current issues such as dependency, ethnic violence, and emigration.  This course is taught in English.
