Contemplating the Qur'an Conference

Associate Professor Maria Dakake will co-host the second "Contemplating the Qur'an" conference at Howard Divinity School in Washington, DC, with Prof. Zainab Alwani of Howard Divinity School. A partnership between Howard Divinity School and GMU's Ali Vural Ak Center for Global Islamic Studies, the conference explores new ways of contemplating, pondering, and critically thinking about the Qur’an, with a particular focus on its narrative, linguistic, and literary structures as a means of access to new theological and ethical meanings in the text.

This year's conference is focused on the Qur’anic approach to history. Papers will examine narrative and stylistic features of Qur'anic accounts of the past; their ethical, theological, anthropological implications; and their influence on Islamic readings of history more generally.
