Maria Mairena received her B.A. in History at George Mason University, her M.T.S. at Protestant Episcopal Seminary of Virginia, Alexandria VA. She is a Ph. D. Candidate at the Department of Church History, The Catholic University of America, Washington D.C. Her Ph.D. topic is:"Restoration of the Roman Catholic Hierarchy in Scotland in 1878." He research interests include: papacy & the Vatican, medical history, and 19th & early 20th century European religious attitudes.

Professor Mairena has lived in Virginia all her life. Her parents emigrated from Nicaragua to Virginia forty years ago and have frequently traveled, for research purposes, to Scotland, England, Italy, Spain and France. In her spare time Miss Mairena enjoys reading Brit lit, crime thrillers, the occasional sci-fi/fantasy novel, chick lit, watching cable news 24/7, listening to NPR and FOX News Radio equally, watching FIFA World Cup qualifying soccer matches, drinking San Benedetto, the alla pesca, planning her next trip to Europe, and listening to 80s bubble gum pop music. She believes that it was no coincidence that the same year that "Walking on Sunshine" was released the Berlin Wall fell.
